IB Biology IA rubric: what examiners look for (24 marks)
The Biology IA is worth 20% of your final IB grade. Examiners assess five criteria:
- Personal Engagement (PE) — 2 marks: Your individual connection to the topic, evidence of genuine curiosity beyond generic statements. IBLens checks whether your introduction demonstrates authentic, specific personal engagement.
- Exploration (Ex) — 6 marks: Research question, hypothesis, variables, methodology, safety and ethical considerations. IBLens checks whether your research question is focused, your variables are correctly identified, and your method is reproducible.
- Analysis (A) — 6 marks: Raw data, data processing, graphs, and statistical analysis. IBLens checks for correct uncertainty analysis, appropriate statistical tests, and whether your data presentation supports your research question.
- Evaluation (Ev) — 6 marks: Conclusions, comparison to literature, evaluation of weaknesses, and suggested improvements. IBLens checks whether your conclusion follows from your data and whether your improvements are specific and realistic.
- Communication (C) — 4 marks: Structure, scientific language, referencing, and presentation. IBLens checks for precise scientific vocabulary and whether your report meets IB format requirements.
Common IB Biology IA mistakes IBLens catches
- Missing uncertainty analysis: Not including absolute or percentage uncertainties in data tables, or failing to propagate uncertainties through calculations. This alone can drop your Analysis score from 6 to 3.
- Vague personal engagement: Writing "I chose this topic because biology interests me" — examiners need a specific personal experience or connection to award both PE marks.
- Weak evaluation section: Listing limitations without analysing their impact on your results, or proposing impractical improvements like "use better equipment".
- Non-scientific language: Using "amount" instead of "concentration", or "things" instead of "variables". The Communication criterion is easy to lose through imprecise language.
- Insufficient statistical processing: Not using t-tests or chi-squared tests when the data type requires them.
